The Milburn Stone Theatre (MST) is known for putting on high quality shows, from all inclusive family holiday shows to outrageously funny comedies to classic musical dramas, and their 2018 opening production Mel Brooks’ “The Producers” is no exception. Combining professional-level presentation and a stunningly talented cast, MST’s production of “The Producers “is an engaging and humorous night out for any adult theatre attendee.
The show opens with a highnergy song detailing the main character’s, Max Bialystock, hilariously portrayed by Dane Hutchinson, rise and fall on Broadway. The story then follows Max as he meets Leo Bloom, the awkward accountant played by Alex Vanderleck. The two develop a scheme to become the richest producers on Broadway—by purposefully producing a flop. The plot follows their ridiculous endeavors and the laughable situations they find themselves in as they attempt to carry out their plan. As many of the jokes are of a risqué or crude nature it would be advisable to leave children of younger ages at home. However, adults looking for a fun night out will surely enjoy this masterpiece of comedy gold.
One of the most outstanding elements of this production are the costumes, which are coordinated by Dan Combs. Every scene dazzles the viewer with brilliantly colorful and authentic looking costumes, which in turn, enable the audience to lose themselves in the story unfolding before them. The costumes are complimented by the fantastic choreography by Natalie Bordley. From the first number, “King of Broadway”, to the hilarious “Springtime for Hitler” scene, the choreography matches the mood of the scene, highlighting the talents of the ensemble. A strong lead cast is important for any show to be successful, but a strong ensemble makes a show truly excellent. The MST’s “Producers” ensemble was particularly excellent in the song “Along Came Bialy” which features a good portion of them dancing…with walkers.
