Clubs and Activities Offered at Cecil College

Written by Rebecca Massey

Cecil College is a commuter campus, so connecting with other students can be challenging. However, there are many different clubs offered on campus which can be a great way to explore new interests and meet new people. There are student organizations for all types of interests, whether it be academic, service related, religious, or a specialized interest. Joining a club is also a great way to beef up your résumé, as many employers see it as an example of working well in groups and possessing leadership qualities.

Cecil College’s Student Life office is responsible for coordinating clubs and organizations, as well as providing them with faculty advisors, places to meet, and event planning.

There are clubs for students in specific areas of study, such as the Student Nurses Association, Horticulture Club, Visual Communications Club, and the Math League. Allies, Mind Matters, and Student Veterans all spread awareness in their respective areas. If you want to learn more about Allies, read our interview with Dr. Orsi. The Art Club, GeekDom, and the Robotics club all cater to people with those specific interests, Amazing Grace is a Christian student organization, and the Student Leadership Council is a programming and event planning group representing all students. The Seahawk Squawk is for any student interested in getting hand-on experience running a newspaper.

Lisa Reynolds from the Student Life office says that clubs give students “an opportunity to do service learning projects off campus or on campus. Amazing Grace went to Baltimore over spring break and helped some inner-city areas there.”

If the idea of being in a club appeals to you, but there are none that cater to your interests, you can always start your own club. Just speak with Lisa Reynolds and she will help you figure out where to go next, “Come to me, we’ll sit down, we’ll talk about the rules and regulations, I’ll show you some documents. As long as you have 4-6 folks that want to join your club we can make that happen, as long as it’s within reason.”

Activities offered by Cecil College range from day-long trips to New York City, to musical performances, and to video game tournaments. Milburn Stone Theatre hosts guest speakers, and themed movie nights. Information on these events can be found on the MyCecil student calendar, on flyers around campus, or at the Student Life office.

If you are interested in signing up for a club, you can contact Lisa Reynolds in the Student Life office. You can also email the contact listed on the club’s MyCecil page.
