Now that we are in the fifth week of classes, you may be struggling with your courses. If this is
the case, take advantage of the Cecil College’s free tutoring services, run by professionals who
love to see students succeed. There are many options available for academic support at Cecil
College.
For mathematical help, the Math Lab provides free tutoring services Monday through Saturday
from experienced staff members. The Math Lab is located in the Engineering and Math building,
which, completed in 2014, is full of up-to-date technology, computers, and other equipment. A
more detailed schedule for Math Lab tutoring can be found on Cecil’s website.
What the Math Lab does for students struggling with math courses, the enthusiastic and
professional tutors in the Writing Center do for those who need help with reading or writing. “We
can help with ANY writing assignment from ANY course. The principles of ‘good’ writing are the
same, no matter the discipline for which a student is writing,” says Holly Hudnall, the Writing
Center’s coordinator. Additionally, “tutors are not just here for writers who are struggling. Even
really, really good writers can benefit from feedback on their writing.”
The tutors offer constructive feedback, instead of just proofreading papers and telling students
how to “fix” them. Hudnall explains that they will “talk to you about your ideas, help you organize
them and get them down on paper, point out areas where the assignment can be improved …
and help you learn to find and correct your own errors.”
Free one-on-one tutoring is offered Monday through Saturday on the 3rd floor of the Arts and
Sciences Building. There’s also an online option, Online Writing Lab (OWL). Students can
expect to receive feedback on an assignment 24 to 48 hours after submitting it through OWL,
even on weekends and holidays. To sign up for OWL, you can go to the Blackboard sign-in
page, or someone in the Writing Center can assist you with enrollment.
As well as the usual free tutoring offered, the Writing Center will be hosting Learning Workshops
on three topics this semester, which, according to Hudnall, “teach about a grammar concept that
many people have trouble with.” Each workshop will consist of a teaching and practice session,
as well as an exercise. The workshops are offered at different times throughout the semester,
so students will have many opportunities to attend. The dates and times are listed below.
Finally, Hudnall reminds students not to procrastinate on getting help with papers, and that while
they can certainly help with an assignment due in an hour, tutors can be much more effective
given more time. Hudnall speaks for all of the tutors in the Writing Center when she says, “Our
number one job is to promote student success in writing, and we take that really seriously.”
