Rocky Delivers a Strong Knockout on the Local Stage

Milburn Stone Theatre’s opening night production of Rocky delivers an engaging and well-executed adaptation of the story that has become a cultural touchstone. Through strong performances, effective musical numbers, and thoughtful production design, the show successfully captures the heart of its central characters and maintains audience interest throughout.

Dave Gordon’s performance of the title character, Rocky Balboa, captures the familiar mannerisms and personality of the film’s original character. His performance evokes Sylvester Stallone’s portrayal, including a vocal inflection that is reminiscent of a young Stallone, while maintaining a strong stage presence all his own. The result is a Rocky that is immediately recognizable and authentic.

Anna Jones conveys the vulnerability, uncertainty, and growing confidence of Adrian. Her vocal performance demonstrates the technical ability and emotional depth that allows her to give the character considerable emotional weight and provides a compelling counterpart to Rocky.

It cannot be overlooked that Milburn Stone Theatre’s own Andrew Mitchell gives an outstanding performance as Adrian’s brother Paulie. By bringing both humor and personality to the role, Mitchell adds another memorable dimension to the ensemble.

The strength stems from the overall ensemble, with musical numbers that complement the story while maintaining the energy and pacing necessary to transition the boxing narrative to the stage. The chemistry between the performers contributes significantly to the show’s momentum, reflecting the preparation and dedication invested in the production.

The enthusiastic audience response at the conclusion, including a standing ovation, reflect the production’s overall success. For theatregoers and Rocky fans alike, this production is well worth experiencing.

The last chance to catch this phenomenal production is September 18, 19, & 20th with Friday and Saturday showings at 7:30 pm while the Sunday show is at 2pm.
